When younger girls arrive at the age of puberty, they need to get a sense that they are growing up and becoming more mature. In addition, their bodies are maturing, so it’s important to get them a training bra once they reach this rite of passage. A training bra is not only a symbol of “growing up”, it is also important for them to have developmentally. A good training bra should be lightweight in material, yet provide enough support. Parents should allow their daughters to choose their own bra, and encourage them to pick out something that they will not only like, but will feel comfortable in. Make sure that they feel ready to wear their training bra and talk to them about why it is important. Finding the right size and material is essential.
Many first bras are simply sports bras, that offer great support yet don’t feel so uncomfortable. These bras feel more like a tank top, and may make your daughter feel a little less self-conscious. You may want to consider this option to begin with until she feels better about wearing them, then she can graduate to something a little bit formal, like a traditional bra. Depending on how rapid your daughter grows, you might want to find a training bra that can adjust to different sizes. Padding is an added feature on many bras, but may not be something you want to opt for, especially with a training bra. Remember to keep it simple at first and allow her to feel comfortable with it. When she is ready to buy something more “formal”, you can always purchase a new one at a later time. Puberty is a very sensitive time for young people, so be aware of your child’s needs and feelings. In time, your child will feel more confident about her new body, and you’ll feel that you were there to help guide her along the way.
